With the Freedom-Drive II^® Trail Rated^® off-road system, when the 4WD system is locked, the vehicle will launch with the 19:1 low range and maintain that ratio until the vehicle reaches a speed of about 15 km/h or more, providing the torque multiplication required for successfully conquering off-road challenges.
Achieves gear reduction effectiveness without the added expense, packaging or mass of a two-speed transfer case and gears. Features a Hill Descent Control with Grade-Sensing feature, allowing the vehicle to crawl forward or in reverse over rocks and other off-road obstacles. Provides added low-speed control and security when off-road.

Includes tow hooks, fuel tank and transmission/oil pan skid plates, trailer tow wiring, engine oil cooler, fog lamps, and P215/65 R17 OWL All-Terrain tires, providing Trail Rated^® capability. Freedom-Drive I™ is an active, full-time four-wheel-drive system, applying torque to the rear wheels when needed, depending on accelerator pedal position or if front wheel slippage is sensed, providing added grip and vehicle stability. It is available with five-speed manual transmission or the Continuously Variable automatic transmission (CVT2).
Features a 4WD LOCK mode, which locks the system and divides torque equally between the front and rear axles for added traction at speeds under 15 km/h.

Helps to brings a cold engine up to operating temperature more quickly. Helpful in extremely cold temperatures.

Includes an effective Low Range mode generating a 19:1 crawl ratio for improved traction performance. Includes brake traction control, 19-inch water fording capability and Hill Descent Control for improved off-road capabilities.

Freedom-Drive II™ incorporates a special version of the Continuously Variable Transmission, CVT2L, which features a unique 19:1 low ratio for severe off-road challenges. Standard Electronic Stability Program (ESP™) with three selectable modes and Freedom-Drive II deep-ratio torque multiplication when in low-speed off-road mode simulate a mechanical two-speed transfer case.
Hill Descent Control with Grade-Sensing feature assists the driver during a hill descent. Features off-road sensing anti-lock braking (ABS), providing shorter stopping distances on loose surfaces.

With the Continuously Variable Transmission (CTV2 and CVT2L) wide ratio spread from launch gear to overdrive provides low engine speed on the highway for smooth, quiet operation. It continuously optimizes ratios, smoothly and almost unobtrusively, providing smoother and responsive operation in city traffic, on hills and when pulling a trailer.

The 158-horsepower 2.0-litre dual Variable Valve Timing (VVT) World Engine, providing exceptional fuel economy for a vehicle in this class, has plenty of smooth, quiet, power thanks to its advanced design.
