Consumers who need to tow, whether it's to haul a trailer or a boat, are turning overwhelmingly to the many SUVs on the market. However, the vast majority of them offer a maximum capacity of 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg), which is not suitable for all types of loads that can be towed.

With the Jeep_® Grand Cherokee, there's really nothing to worry about, as the Jeep Grand Cherokee's capabilities in this area far exceed those of the competition.

Let's see what it's possible to tow with a Grand Cherokee.

V6 Engine

With the Pentastar^TM 3.6-litre V-6, which offers 295 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, it's possible to tow up to 6,200 pounds or 2,812 kg.

V8 Engines

With the famous 5.7-litre HEMI^® V-8 engine, which offers 360 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque, towing capacity can be as high as 7,200 pounds (3,266 kg). On the Grand Cherokee SRT^® with the 6.4-litre SRT V-8 engine and on the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk^TM with the Supercharged 6.2-litre V-8 engine, the towing capacity is also 7,200 pounds (3,266 kg). For these two mills, the output goes up to 475 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque, and 707 horsepower and 645 lb.-ft. of torque respectively.

Towing Package

To be sure to perform towing operations according to the rules of the trade, it's a good idea to equip your Grand Cherokee with the available Trailer Tow Group IV (which comes standard on Trailhawk^TM, Overland^® and Summit^® models). It includes a Class IV hitch receiver, 4- and 7-pin wiring harness, a full size or compact spare tire (depending on the model), a rear load-levelling suspension (on Laredo and Limited models) and a heavy-duty engine cooling system.

Towing Aids

Jeep_® Grand Cherokee also offers several features that can help you enjoy a safe and efficient towing experience. These include features such as the ParkView^® rearview camera that provides a view of the trailer.

It not only gives you a clear picture of the space behind it, but also provides on-screen demarcation lines to help you guide your hitch in reverse. When you're on the move, you can also use this camera to take a look at your trailer.

Using the Selec-Track® with Launch Control on SRT and Trackhawk^TM models, you can even enjoy driving modes that offer the following settings: Auto, Sport, Track, Snow and Tow. Choose the Tow setting, which modifies torque delivery for smoother starts and adjusts the suspension for pitch and yaw to optimize towing performance. The mode uses a 60/40 torque split.
