OVERVIEW OF THE 2021 JEEP WRANGLER'S 4X4 SYSTEMS

2021-03-03
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler is synonymous with off-road capability, and the heart of the Wrangler’s abilities off the beaten path are its different 4x4 systems.
The standard four-wheel drive system on the 2021 Jeep Wrangler is the Command-Trac 4x4 system, offered out of the gate on the Jeep Wrangler Sport, Sport S, Unlimited Sport S, and Sahara.

Command-Trac 4x4

The system gives owners two options on the road, 4x2 and 4x4. The first is suited to clear road conditions, like a nice summer day where four-wheel traction isn’t required. Keeping the Wrangler in 4x2 also maximizes fuel economy. The 4x4 system which is activated by shifting the Command-Trac 4x4 lever to 4WD HI is for those more difficult conditions when grip is limited. This can be on an off-road trail, on a wet road or when the road is cold or covered in snow. Shifting to 4WD HI is possible at up to 72 km/h and results in a perfectly balanced (50/50) torque split between the front and rear axles.
This means that the Wrangler will be more stable and will preserve its stability should the front or rear wheels lose traction unexpectedly. It also means that going up snow-covered roads or gravel hills will be quite a bit easier.
The Command-Trac 4x4 system also has a 2.71:1 low range that is used at low speeds when going over tough obstacles like rocks, for example. You can also use the low range when you need more power at low speeds, such as when towing a boat out of the water.
The system also has a neutral mode that you can engage to flat tow the Wrangler.

Selec-Trac 4x4

Selec-Trac is an available option on the Wrangler Unlimited Sahara and for 2021 is available on Sport models. Similar to the Command-Trac 4x4 system, Selec-Trac has a full-time mode that can detect when road conditions change and require 4WD. In simple terms, Selec-Trac can automatically change from 4x2 to 4x4 and back.
This means that when road conditions require extra grip and stability, Selec-Trac will automatically switch to 4x4 to provide the driver with the best traction. Once conditions improve, the system will revert back to 4x2.

Rock-Trac 4x4

Rock-Track 4x4 is designed for the harshest conditions, and it’s no surprise that it is standard on the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.
The Rock-Trac 4x4 system is a rugged part-time system that is paired with Tru-Lok electronic locking differentials and front sway bar disconnect. In other words, you can lock the front and rear differential to cross the most difficult situations, and you can disconnect the sway bar for improved handling and articulation over narrow areas.
A NV241OR off-road transfer case with a 4:1 low-gear ratio is available with Rock-Trac 4x4, giving the driver a consistent 0.8 km/h speed to slowly crawl over the most challenging obstacles faced off the beaten path.
These 4x4 systems are suited to different situations and needs, but all provide the exceptional grip and capability expected of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler lineup.
