JEEP SELEC-TERRAIN: A DRIVING MODE FOR ANY AND EVERY SITUATION

2021-03-24
Throughout the Jeep product line, several vehicles are equipped with the Selec-Terrain system. It essentially consists of settings that allow you to adjust the vehicle's behaviour according to the type of surface or situations encountered.
Here are the different modes the system is composed of and the advantages of selecting them. Keep in mind that some of them may be exclusive to certain models or variants of those models, as you will see.

Auto

The Auto mode, as its name indicates, automatically manages the various mechanical settings for optimal grip. Its settings may vary from one vehicle to another. Still, essentially, it responds to road conditions, distributing torque where it is required if specific wheels are spinning on a slippery surface.

Snow

The snow mode reduces the power sent to the wheels to ensure smooth starts in the snow. It's like putting the transmission in second gear for a more confident launch. With a vehicle like the Grand Cherokee, for example, torque is distributed evenly between the front and rear wheels.

Sand/Mud

The adjustment designed for sandy or muddy surfaces is designed to prevent your Jeep from getting stuck in soft sand or mud. It recalibrates throttle management and torque distribution to reduce wheel slip and improve traction. The goal is to maintain a steady pace on the surface to avoid getting stuck.

Rock

On Trailhawk versions, the Rock mode is designed to overcome difficult obstacles at low speed. It can only be engaged when in the low range (4L). It locks the axles, distributes torque evenly and has a high gear ratio, allowing the driver to overcome significant obstacles at very low speeds but evenly with maximum traction to avoid slipping. The mode also allows the driver to use the hill descent control system.

Sport

On some models, you will find a Sport mode. By activating the Sport mode on a Grand Cherokee, for example, the interval between gear changes is reduced by 50 percent compared to Auto mode; the four-wheel-drive anti-skid and steering systems are adjusted to ensure a more dynamic ride; the shift paddles are activated, and the suspension is adjusted without reducing comfort to provide enhanced performance compared to Auto mode. The engine’s torque is split 35/65 between the front and rear axles for an authentic high-performance feeling.

Track

With Track mode (specific to Grand Cherokee SRT and Trackhawk), the interval between gear changes is reduced by 68% to 160 milliseconds compared to Auto mode; the four-wheel-drive anti-skid and steering systems are adjusted to provide optimum track performance; the shift paddles are activated, and the suspension is firmed to its maximum to provide optimal performance on smooth, dry surfaces. The engine’s torque is split 30/70 between the front and rear axles.

Tow

Finally, Tow mode (specific to Grand Cherokee SRT and Trackhawk) modifies torque output to achieve smoother starts and adjusts the suspension to counteract pitch and yaw to optimize towing performance.
