SELEC-SPEED CONTROL (SSC) IS YOUR SECRET OFF-ROAD WEAPON

Anyone who does a lot of off-road driving will tell you, there’s a lot to take into account and consider when out on the trails. In many ways, off-road driving is as challenging as track driving with more elements in close proximity to consider. That’s where a feature like Selec-Speed Control (SCC) can come in handy.

Notably offered on the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Selec-Speed Control is used only in off-road conditions when the 4WD Low Range is selected. The goal of the system is to maintain a constant speed by controlling engine torque and the brakes, keeping the vehicle’s momentum stable and allowing the driver to focus solely on steering.
Think of it as a cruise control system, but for off-roading.

Using Selec-Speed Control

A set of conditions must be met before for Selec-Speed Control can be enabled. The vehicle must be in 4WD Low Range and speed must be below 8 km/h. The driver’s door must be closed, the driver can’t be applying throttle and the parking brake must be released.
From there, SSC is enabled by pushing the SSC switch. It is not, however, activated at this point.
It activates when the driver releases the brake, the transmission is in gear and the vehicle speed is below 32 km/h. From here, the speed maintained by the system will depend on the chosen gear which is selected using the automatic gearbox’s manual mode.
The maximum speed is equivalent to the gear chosen, meaning that if the driver selects 1st gear, the maximum speed is 1 km/h. If 5th gear is chosen, the maximum speed is 5 km/h and the maximum speed is either 8 km/h or 9 km/h depending on whether the vehicle has an 8-speed automatic or 9-speed automatic.
Concretely, this means that if you activate Selec-Speed Control and put the vehicle in 6th gear, the vehicle will maintain a steady speed of 6 km/h through a trail. The driver can focus on maneuvering while SSC takes care of throttle. Of course, the driver can regain control of throttle and braking simply by applying one or the other.
Although the responsibility of controlling the vehicle, including its speed, remains on the driver and SSC should be used strictly to assist, it is a formidable tool in off-road driving that greatly enhances the experience.
